For Better or For Best

I have read many Christian books on marriage and on becoming a better wife, but few are more than psychological dribble with a few scriptures thrown in here and there for good measure.  Here is one that, in my opinion, shines out in the pack.  I had never heard of Gary Smalley until I read the book The Blessing. I was impressed with that book, and I am just as impressed, if not more so, with this one.

Gary lays it all out on the line for us wives.  He is open and honest from a man’s perspective AND from a scriptural perspective about how a woman can grow to understand how her husband operates, how she can learn to motivate him without nagging and manipulation, and how she can get him to better understand her needs and wants in the relationship.  He is very quick to point out that so many women are disillusioned by marriage because they have grown up with the “fairy tale mentality” that proliferates so heavily through the minds of young girls and women in today’s times.  We spend our whole lives dreaming up our perfect “Prince Charming” and then become sorely disappointed when our spouses don’t match up to our ideal.  This book points to the truth that we cannot expect another human being to be our source of happiness.  Only Jesus is the answer to complete happiness.  Only He can make us whole in our hearts.  Putting pressure on our husbands to fulfill this need is not only unwarranted, but unfair.

Using Gary’s practical advice, personal applications, and suggested Bible studies, any woman can begin to not only open her eyes to the insights on the other gender, but greatly improve the dynamics in her marriage and her relationship with Christ.
