All About Spelling Review and Giveaway!

Last year we used the built in spelling lessons that were a part of the boxed curriculum that was the base of our homeschool.  It was the first year that we had implemented spelling since my oldest was only in the first grade.  I had never given much thought to how I wanted to teach this particular subject.  I figured that it would come easily when the time came.

I was wrong.

My daughter was a natural reader, memorizing books as a toddler and then requesting reading lessons as a very young preschooler.  By kindergarten, she was reading chapter books.  She picked up on words so quickly that she began to learn them merely from following the words on the page when I read them aloud.

Eventually, we hit a stumbling block.  She’d been through a complete and thorough phonics program, but she was so used to being a little advanced that she really didn’t like when she came across a word that she had to sound out. She’d get very frustrated and say that she didn’t remember the phonics rules that applied.  When I suggested that we go back through our phonics program to refresh her memory, she complained that doing so would make her feel bad because “it was for younger kids.”  I went to some other homeschooling mothers for advice because I certainly did not want my girl to be so discouraged and one suggestion was made time and time again—All About Spelling

I was told that not only would this program help resolve my daughter’s reading frustrations, but it would also give her the tools that she needed to be a successful speller.  So far with what we’d been using, retention was not happening.  I wasn’t sure how I was going to remedy this problem but I hadn’t expected to jump ship on our current curriculum.  Though I was hesitant at first, eventually I decided to make the move and give something new a try.  I purchased Level One and dove right in.

Let me tell you that I am so very happy that I took this chance!  I could immediately see a difference in my daughter’s phonemic abilities.  The best part?  She didn’t realize that she was reviewing her phonics skills because they were a part of her spelling lessons!  When we completed Level One she was so proud of her accomplishment.

We were then blessed to receive All About Spelling: Level Two for review.  Just like the first level, this one is also multi-sensory.  Children learn spelling rules through sight, sound, and touch so no matter what sort of learner you have, All About Spelling can work for them.

Instead of learning through rote memorization of an arbitrary list of words, this curriculum breaks words down to their bare bones.  It shows students the how and why of the formation of words and syllables.

Building on the foundation of the skills learned in the first level, the twenty five steps in level two will further strengthen your child’s spelling muscles.  Flashcards are used for review daily to provide reinforcement, the whiteboard and magnetic tiles give a visual component so that your child can physically build the words, and dictation exercises assess retention.

In level two, concepts include:

  • Open and closed syllables
  • How silent E can make a long sound
  • Ways to spell long E
  • Soft and hard C and G
  • How to divide words into syllables
  • Lots more!

The teacher’s manual is designed to be completely open and go, so you won’t have to spend precious time preparing lesson plans and organizing materials.  It has guidance throughout, but isn’t heavily scripted.  Though there are twenty five steps, you should move only at the pace of your student until mastery is achieved.  Don’t feel like you must rush through or skip steps.   Take your time and ensure that your child really absorbs the lessons. Mastery is more important than temporary memorization!

Customized spelling lists accompany every step and aid you in continually reviewing the concepts presented.  By using a variety of words instead of a set list, I found that I could better assess whether or not my daughter was truly learning the rules or just memorizing particular words.

Dictation exercises provide penmanship practice while also testing to see if your child has learned the given words without having an official “test.”  This is one of my favorite features because I don’t believe in testing in the younger years.  Again, mastery is more important than temporary memorization!

If you have been in search of the perfect curriculum to help teach spelling, then I think you should absolutely check out All About Spelling!
