It’s time for Poppins Book Nook! This month’s theme was pirates! What kid doesn’t have fun when pretending to be a scurvy scallywag?

This month, our featured book was Pirates on the Farm by Denette Fretz, Illustrated by Gene Barretta.

This amusing hardcover picture book tells the tale of five swashbuckling pirates who decide to turn in their sea hats and settle down on a small southern farm. The Sanders family that lives next door isn’t too sure about the new marauding residents, but the family next door extends a helping hand, attempting to teach how to manage their new property. With some interesting ways of performing ordinary tasks and manners that could use some sprucing up, these pirates tend to bring trouble wherever they go in their new town. When the other townsfolk become fed up with the mayhem, can a kindly gesture save them from being kicked out of their new home?

The underlying Christian message in this book is to show the love of Christ to everyone as we “Love our neighbor as ourselves” as the Bible commands even if they are different. It’s a fun parable that will have children learning deep truths and enjoying a good laugh as they look over the various shenanigans that the pirates partake in on each brightly illustrated page.  I really appreciated the lesson taught as the Sanders family shines their light as Jesus asked of them despite the problems that were caused by their new neighbors.  Teaching our children to treat others with kindness, even those that are difficult to love, is a great stepping stone to showing them how the Gospel works in action. Purchase your own copy from Zondervan for $12.99.

After reading this enjoyable tale, I created this pirate themed printable pack for my children to use. Now I’m offering it to you for FREE! Just click the picture below to download!
