When I Grow Up Fashion Show Game and Race{Plus FREE Community Helpers Printables}

Is it already the end of August? Where did the summer go?

It’s time for Poppins Book Nook! A monthly virtual book club where several bloggers share a book and a craft or activity that correspond to a select theme. This month’s theme was “What Will I Be When I Grow Up?”

When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a waitress. I’m not kidding. At the time, that is what my mother did for a living and so it was natural for me to want to follow suit. Little did I know that I would later spend nearly a decade of my life serving up food to restaurant patrons! At a different time in my childhood, I wanted to be a marine biologist. I guess my younger self wasn’t aware of my city girl animal phobia.

In the end, I turned out to have a multi faceted, high demand career—mommy. I am completely happy with my job of choice and look forward to many more happy years of “employment.”

These days when I ask my own children what they’d like to be when they are grown ups, answer will vary on the day. They may say they want to be Spiderman, a teacher, a fairy cat (that’s my 4 year old), or any other job that strikes their fancy at the moment. That’s the great thing about childhood–you can dream big and reach high or into the depths of your imagination.

This month, to go with the book club theme, I chose Whatever You Grow Up to Be by Karen Kingsbury.

This book is a touching book of how a mother reminds her son that God has big plans for him, no matter what he turns out to be when he is grown. You can read my full thoughts on it and learn more by reading my review.

For this theme, I decided to have a little fun with my children. Rather than doing a craft, I came up with a little game.

The What Will I Be When I Grow Up Fashion Show Race

Rules are simple and easy:

  • One person is the timekeeper and job chooser.  This person sets a timer for five minutes. Before starting it, they shout out the title of a job. Then they say, “Go!”
  • Participants then have the allotted five minutes to run throughout the house and use whatever dress up clothes, toys, or other items they can find to dress themselves to look the part of the given job.
  • When the time is up, everyone returns to the same spot and models their ensemble.

That’s it! We ended up playing this game multiple times and for at least 30-45 minutes each time.  My children had a blast and it was fun to see what they came up with to represent the various occupations.

"Rock Star"

"Police Officer"

As you can see, my six year old son has an—interesting–take on most of the careers.

All in all, we had a great time and I’d recommend trying this out with your own children to see what they turn up dressed in!

Also to accompany this theme, I’ve created some fun community helper themed coloring pages that also include handwriting practice! There are 16 pages in the pack.
