Duck Dynasty is all the rage in many circles. Since the family culture in the famous Robertson family is very, very similar to that of my country bred husband, he quite enjoys the show. It’s become a bonding time between him and the children to sit down and watch an episode or two, laughing at the family’s antics. When we received the Duck Commander Devotions for Kids book by Korie Robertson and Chrys Howard, they were absolutely thrilled.
This hardcover 224 page devotional pleasantly surprised me. I’m not a die hard Robertson fan like my children I worried that this book would be full of the familiar humor, but possibly be short on solid, in depth biblical teaching. I didn’t want to be suckered in by the name on the cover if it was just a marketing tool. However, from the first time we cracked open the pages, I thought to myself that I had found a great new tool to use with my children that would help teach them how to apply God’s Word to their daily lives.
Every devotion begins with a Scripture verse and is followed by an anecdote from the Robertson family, filled with their familiar humor and antics. After the reading there is a prayer and a “Duck Commander in Action” section that gives children an activity or task to do to show them how to live out the principle taught in that day’s lesson.
I found that the stories spoke to children without watering down the message but also keeping the message relevant and age appropriate. It’s a really fun resource to add to your shelves for teaching your children about the Lord.
